Villa Augustina Students WILL FIGHT HUNGER "On An Empty Stomach" for children worldwide

Goffstown - 7 February 2009 - The Villa Augustina school will participate in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine – getting a real taste of hunger to help feed and care for children living in extreme poverty around the world. They join approximately half a million teens nationwide aiming to raise more than $12 million to fight world hunger.  Now in its 19tth year, World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine raises awareness and money to fight hunger both overseas and in the United States. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender. For more information, visit www.worldvision.org. This is the Villa Augustina’s 8th annual Famine.  During the 30 hours, teens will do the Famine “on an empty stomach” – the theme for this year – by giving up their normal food fare  (consuming only juice and water, and a select set of allowances like rice cakes, and cut vegetables) to experience what the poorest children and families face every day. During the time students will learn about the causes of world hunger, and what we can do to help. Our fast begins 2:00AM Thursday, and ends on Friday with a breakfast meal at 8:00AM.  In other words – we miss all our meals on Thursday.  Roughly half a million teens nationwide participate in the 30 Hour Famine each year. Last year, approximately $12 million was raised, contributing to World Vision’s response in countries worldwide where famine, conflict, and other crises make children vulnerable to hunger and preventable disease.  Additional information about the 30 Hour Famine can be found online at www.30hourfamine.org.  For inquiries about the Villa Augustian's upcoming quest to help others in need, you may contact Jyl Dittbenner at 603.361.8906.

In another effort, the Villa Augustina School will be making “Houses for Haiti” Pins to be sold at a later date to raise money for Haiti.  Recently Villa staff and students ran a can and dollar drive that ended February 5, and a $5 dress down drive during the month of January with appreciative results.(Villa Augustina photo courtesy of Rich Damboise of 2D Designs)

Article 21 in a resolution to "Define Marriage"

Goffstown/New Boston - 4 February 2010 - At the Town Deliberative Session in Goffstown on Wednesday evening Article 21  to "define marriage" was modified from it's original form (see our video below) to read as follows on the March 9th Ballot; "To See"...  GoffstownToday.com has produced a video which brings forward comments from both sides.  In New Boston, the debate was just as lively.  Voters held positions on both sides as to whether the Article should or should not be supported.  The original Article wording will hold on the March 9th ballot as the proposed amendment failed.

Maple Ave Principal Pyszka reports strong results on state assessment.

Goffstown - 4 February 2010 - Maple Ave School Principal Suzanne Pyszka reports that the third and fourth grade students did extremely well on the state assessment that was administered this past October.  "We have received the school results and will be receiving the individual student results in the next few days.  We would like to celebrate the hard work that every child put forth to show what they know on this high-stakes test", Principal Pyszka reports.  Overall results:  Grade 3 Proficient or Above Readers - 114 students out of 130, Grade 3 Proficient or Above Math students - 111 children out of 130, Grade 4 Proficient or Above Readers, 83 out of 97 children and Grade 4 Proficient or Above Math students - 81 out of 97 students.

Goffstown Deliberative Session (Town Side) was handled by Referee Rodney Stark - GoffstownToday.com takes pride in presenting this story 1st in our market place

Goffstown - 4 February 2010 2:43am - On Wednesday evening Town Moderator Rodney Stark opened up the session to the public with 17 Articles for presentation, review, proposed modifications and discussion.  Attendance was higher than it has been in the past and voters were ready and willing to take part in their 1st Amendment rights.  The first order of business for the meeting brought about a presentation from outgoing Dave French, (retiring) to long time Moderator Rodney Stark of a Referee shirt, which the Moderator proudly wore throughout the entire evening.  The crowd enjoyed this bit of rivalry.  Additionally, Chairman, Selectman Scott Gross, who presented a wrapped chocolate candy bar to Dave French at his retirement party two weeks ago encountered an unintended interception from Dave only to get it back into his possession.  It will be interesting to see just how this candy bar may surface in the future as Mr. Gross is always thinking and has a plan for everything before him.

The Craig Heiber Theatre was filled to about two-thirds capacity and several voters certainly came prepared to not only embrace discussion on the articles, but to enter modifications and motions as the evening progressed.  Of the 17 Articles before the voters, three in particular gained popularity with lengthy discussions.  It is the view of this writer that there was about an equal number of people "for" articles as well as those who "opposed' Articles.  This brought about vibrant discussion from both sides and all presenters were of exemplary behavior during the entire evening.  True Democracy embraced with a high degree of respect was considered by all.

Not withstanding, the evening closed just after midnight and three Articles in particular gained a significant amount of attention from all sides.  Article 9., the first Article for presentation kept people busy for over an hour.  This Article proposed to raise the sum of $948,000 for the purchase of three vehicles to replace a 1994 Fire Truck, a 1999 ten wheeled dump truck, and a 2000 Solid Waste automated collection vehicle.  Historically, the Town has purchased vehicles in each particular year, however this proposed Article asks voters to pay for them over a 5 year period at an approximate interest rate of 5% in order to lessen the immediate tax impact on tax payers in 2010 alone.  Other funds utilized to reduce the expense of financing would  be acquired in the amount of $100,000 now held in the Fire Apparatus Capital Reserve Fund and approximately $119,000 via taxation.  Article 11., on the Operating Budget which is not recommended by the Selectmen, however recommended by the Budget Committee brought about a "Secret Ballot" vote on the $19,208,477 Article. Once the votes were tallied, there were 87 in favor and 86 opposed with one vote of "no" not eligible for counting.  Mr. Tim Redmond advised that his vote slip ripped in half and he had the exact match of the vote cast aside and recognized to the Moderator that the vote should count and that it was his vote.  Mr. Dan Cloutier and Mr. Guy Caron addressed the Moderator referencing their opinion to count the vote as well as State Statutes, however Moderator Rodney Stark was not convinced and denied the request to count Mr. Redmond's vote.  Had Mr. Redmond's vote been counted, the result would have been a tie and the proposed amendment would have failed.  As a result, the amendment passed by one vote.  Article 21., which gives the Citizens of Goffstown the ability to submit a resolution (this is a non-binding Article which simply offers an opinion to those in the legislature and Senate) on allowing the Citizens of New Hampshire to vote on an amendment to the New Hampshire Constitution that defines "marriage".  Of all debates during the evening, this particular Article brought out deep opinions from both sides.  GoffstownToday.com currently has video in production about this Article and other video media of interest and will be posted here as soon as it's out of production.

Pay your fines with food at the Goffstown Public Library (February is food for fines month)

Goffstown - 3 February - News From Dianne Hathaway, Director
February at the GPL is when we collect nonperishable food items, cleaning products and personal care items for the local food pantry in place of late fines.  It's also a way for us to get our overdue library books, audios and
more back where they belong AND we help out our community.  Here are the guidelines: pay your entire fine to the collection can to be turned over to the food pantry or bring in a comparable number of items that we can bring to the pantry.  Either way your fines will be removed from your record-it's easy!  As usual we are looking for our patrons to be generous in "paying" back by bringing new food (canned and boxed), diapers, toothpaste, paper products, cleaning products, etc. in to the circulation desk February 1st through 28th.  You may only donate food in lieu of overdue fines; if you owe the library money for a lost or damaged item you still must make payment-sorry!  (NOTE:  It is important that no food items have an expired date-please check)  Please visit the GPL on line to find out more about what we do....

GHS Principal Frank McBride calls for a faculty meeting Tuesday about the March 9th Vote on the School Budget

Goffstown - 2 February 2010 - Principal Frank McBride called for a faculty meeting after school on Tuesday.  He explained to the staff that cuts are going to need to happen.  We will know what those cuts will be soon, so we could encourage people to vote "no" on the article so the default budget takes effect.  He was clear to state that the default budget would mean less cuts need to happen.  A teacher asked the question as to whether or not anyone was organizing.  McBride stated there were different parent groups at the different schools and also booster clubs that could organize.  "As a district we cannot organize" McBride said.  McBride encouraged staff to talk to people and encourage staff who are residents to get the word out. It is anticipated that SAU#19 administrator Stacey Buckley will announce cuts soon so that people can start moving on the issue for March 9th.

How come you are not leasing your vehicle?

What are you driving?

Let’s go backwards today as most individuals who lease vehicles never think about the lease end process.  Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!  You have seen the ads for payments like $179 per month with no money down…  ouch; if you don’t pay it now, you will pay later.  These low monthly payment lease plans are often stretched out for up to 60 months and for that, the light should go off.  What you do need to know is that the Dealer does not lease the vehicle.  A financial institution is the agent for the lease, so don’t get mad at your dealer at lease end.  Another word of advice is that you should only sign a lease agreement that is factory sponsored, in that Ford is Ford Credit, Toyota is Toyota Motor Credit.  Why you may ask!  There is absolutely no relationship between the lessee, the Dealer and the Leasing company that administers the lease contract as a whole.  Now with that said, should a problem arise, Toyota will likely listen closer to your issue simply because their financial arm is the leasing company whereas, XYZ leasing could care less about the dealer and you in the relationship arena.

At lease end, it is time to turn the car in and what if you can’t just “walk away” from it.  The lease end process can be a frightening experience for excess wear and use.  For example, if you lease a car for more than 24 months, there is a good chance you will need to put new tires on it, just to turn it in without a charge for tires at a price you have no control of.  Walk around your car and see what you might consider would be in excess of normal wear and use.  Then take a look at the interior and do the same.  A good starting point is to look at the vehicle you are driving today.  Would it pass a lease end inspection process?

As an example, a Ford Credit lease has clear outlines as to what is allowed for normal wear and use.  To make the lessee more comfortable during the term of the lease Ford Credit offers a product called WearCare which provides protection for up to $2,500 in excess wear and use.  You will need to view the product page at the link above for specifics of coverage.  I choose Ford Motor as an example because they have reported the best in customer satisfaction for three years running, are not government owned, are family owned,  just announced strong profits, sales are up 24% from December 09 to January 10, and up year over year with a constant improvement in quality rankings, as an example the Ford Fusion is named the Motor Trend Magazine Car of the Year for 2010.

When it comes to mileage, you should always find a lease with a mileage allowance of no less than 15,000 per year, therefore on a 36 month lease you have a 45,000 mile allowance.  Anything less than 15,000 miles a year will only generate the opportunity to pay so much per mile to the leasing company at lease end for excess miles driven.  Remember, you don’t trade your lease vehicle in at lease end, you want to simply walk away from it.  For example at the conclusion of a 24 month lease you turn in the keys, the tires should be fine and as long as there is no excess wear and use, you are good to go.  The beauty of leasing is that “you only pay for the portion of the car that you use”…  and this is a smart way to manage your transportation needs.  You have three options at lease end in most cases; 1.  keep the car and pay off the pre-determined buy out or 2. Sell the car to someone and keep the profit.  The dealer will probably charge you a fee to process the title paperwork and, 3.  Turn the vehicle in and walk away…  Now, stand next to your vehicle at the conclusion of 24 months of ownership, ownership you think you have, however you are still paying the bank every month for likely up to 60 months, so the bank is the owner (get the reason to lease concept here) and then call the financial institution for your pay-off amount and then go on line and see what the average trade-in value is.  If you owe $18,000 and the trade-in value is $12,000, you are upside down $6,000.  ouch!  If you were in a lease that concluded at 24 months in this scenario, the financial institution is on the hook, not you!  Walk away with a smile and lease another vehicle and only pay for the portion of the vehicle that you use.

Need I say any more!

Reiki is an old hands-on-healing technique that was re-discovered in the late 1800's by Dr. Usui.  Reiki helps promote peace, speeds healing, builds the immune system and releases stress and physical pain.  It's wonderful to learn not only for yourself but to help others.

C.O.R.E. Counseling is a Holistic approach to helping someone understand the unconsious reasons why something negative is happening in their life.  Every day we make choices and decisions from old programming that is stored in our unconscious. This old programming comes from childhood experiences that form perceptions that we are  not aware of.  If we are not aware of this old programming, we can create a life of struggle instead of abundance and joy. C.O.R.E. Counseling helps one become aware of not only what it is, but how to release it and then create a great new destiny.

Hypnosis is a valuable tool that helps access the unconscious to help with any problem in one's life.  We naturally go in and out of self hypnosis daily but are not conscious of it; such as highway hypnosis or daydreaming. Hypnosis has been used for many years with fantastic results for test anxiety, pain control, childbirth, to stop smoking and for weight loss to name just a few.

A Letter of Thanks from Robbie Grady, Executive Director of the Goffstown Main Street Program re:  Send a Valentine to the Troops!

Goffstown 1 February 2010 - Once again, the Goffstown community has shown its spirit!  The Goffstown Main Street Program sponsored a Send A Valentine to the Troops project last week, and the response has been inspirational!  Special thanks go to Lorraine Pascucci of the Village Trestle who came up with the idea of collecting items to send to our military members overseas.  Lorraine and her husband, Steve, are two generous souls who are always looking for ways to help others.  Several of our Downtown businesses collected and donated items: Apotheca Flower Shoppe and Tea Chest, Luna Salon, Vikster’s Pizza, and Jo-Marie’s Country Shoppe all participated.  Jo-Marie had customers collecting items in Concord for her! The Goffstown Public Library hosted a Valentine making workshop and collected cards and knitted helmet liners all week long.  Daisy Girl Scout Troop 20841 produced lovely cards, and Maple Avenue students came through, too.  Stacy of Two Friends coordinated the effort among the classes of Mrs. Beauschene, Mrs. Birdsey, Mrs. Ghelli, Mrs. Nicholson, Mrs. Magoon, Ms. Rivard, Ms. Morris, Ms. Blanchette, Ms. Parkinson, Ms. Sarette, and Ms. Zola.  Sarabeth Ward volunteered her time to box up all the items for us.  This is a project we can all feel good about!  Thanks to all who participated,

Weare residents attend the Annual Deliberative Session this past Saturday.

Weare 1 February 2010 - On Saturday 30 January 2010, the Town held it's Annual Deliberative Session at the Weare Middle School.  Many residents came forward to discuss and make motions on Warrant Articles to be brought before the voters on March 9th.  Articles on spending and the Town Budget were the highlight of the meeting.  Attendees were well prepared with questions while seeking  discussion regarding financial impacts to the tax rate. Excerpts of the Deliberative session can be watched in the video below produced by GoffstownToday.com.

Goffstown School Deliberative Session ends at 11pm Monday evening, which drew a near capacity crowd at the GHS Craig Heiber Theatre

Goffstown 1 February 2010 - The Deliberative Session was scheduled to start at 7pm Monday evening and began a few minutes late.  This was due to the high number of residents checking in with the Checklist Supervisors.  Everyone agreed that this Session appeared to be a record breaker for those in attendance.  Moderator James Raymond handled the entire session in an superb manner keeping everything organized and moving along.  Mr. Raymond was clear from the outset about the conduct of the meeting and stated that this venue was not to be used for personal attacks on any matter and especially towards anyone in attendance.  This apparently fell on deaf ears of Selectman (Chairman) Scott Gross. (see video clip below)  The Moderator spoke out twice halting Mr. Gross's attempted personal attacks on individuals of the Budget Committee.  Selectman Gross utilized a similar attack when Bill Gordon was running for selectmen  in 2009 with information he obtained from a third party's facebook page.  Mr. Gross can be commended for his involvement in the 250th Goffstown Anniversary Planning, however some people expressed their feeling that these tactics are uncalled for by anyone, especially an Elected Official.  It's all about integrity and Mr. Gross's integrity is called into question by some tonight.  Earlier in the evening School Board Chairman Keith Allard attempted to increase the School Budget from the outset of deliberations with a motion of almost $900,000; the motion failed.  At the conclusion of the meeting, voters on March 9th will choose from either the School Board Default Budget of $15.31 per $1,000 assessed value, an increase of $3.40 or the Budget Committee recommendation of $14.53 per $1,000 assessed value, an increase of $2.62.  Voters were paying attention and many expressed opinions of "control the spending" as it makes sense for the School Board to keep expenditures in line with current economic conditions.  Some expressed concern for the increase while there are likely some residents of the community facing home foreclosure and job losses.  Goffstown Television recorded the event and it is likely the show will air as soon as this week.  The Town Deliberative Session is Wednesday 3 February 2010 at 7pm at the Goffstown High School in the Craig Heiber Theatre.  Articles up for discussion and possible amendments include Fire Apparatus, Department of Public Works vehicle purchases and more.

New Boston Winter Carnival was an absolute blast for so many parents and visitors.

New Boston 30 January 2010 - This year's carnival was an absolute blast according to almost everyone in attendance.  It sure was cooooooooold outside and because of the very low temperatures, outside events except for sledding were canceled.  Those wanting to take a hay-ride will have to wait until next year.  The day's event started out with students getting some basketball court time with coaches.  As parents, friends and relatives watched their young children move about the court, camera's were clicking and video tapes rolling.  Food offered was another outstanding part of the event with a Chili cook-off contest.  There were three top winners and you can find out more in the video presentation (Part 1) below.  As the day moved on, tickets were sold for the endless "huge" baskets of goodies, all prepared by students with donations and generosity of many in the community.  Topping off the day was the lip-sync contest.  The Carnival Lip-sync contest now has a new record with a two-years in a row 1st place winner.  GoffstownToday.com produced two video's of this event and they are worth the watch....  Enjoy and mark your calendar to certainly attend this event in 2011.  i wouldn't miss it!  It's just that much fun!

Weare Zoning Board takes action on an administrative appeal regarding the Asphalt Batch Plant

Weare - 2 February 2010 - A full Board was present to review an Administrative Appeal by the Applicant, Mt. William, Inc. (Owner, Chris Bolton) of the Planning Boards Decision of 18 November 2009.  The Planning Board denied the site plan review application for an asphalt batch plant in November and the Applicant went before the Zoning Board with an in-depth detail of information from their attorney.  With just two items on the agenda for the evening, almost all in attendance were present for this particular hearing.  After approximately 90 minutes of review and presentations from the applicants attorney, interested parties and abbutters, Chairman Dearborn closed the hearing and moved to deliberations on whether to approve or deny the request.  Chairman Dearborn heard from members of the Board and in about 20 minutes the Board unanimously decided to deny the request.  This decision will require the applicant to appeal to the Superior Court to further efforts in gaining an approval.  Primarily, discussions involved  whether adding the asphalt batch plant operation is of an accessory use of which the applicant argued that it would be and qualifies as such and consideration should be granted.  All members of the Zoning Board did not agree with this assessment.

Crispin's House is a wealth of opportunity for youth!

Goffstown: by Bill Wynne, (20 Jan 2010) As I entered the Goffstown Public Library and made my way to the second floor, I could hear voices of laughter and enlightenment.  Being somewhat surprised at the number of people in attendance, I was glad to learn of the number of people involved in Crispin's House and the hard work that is done by many to work with our youth of the Community.  Crispin's House Mission Statement is as follows:

Here for Youth, Crispin's House works to prevent juvenile delinquency, drug, tobacco and alcohol involvement through positive leisure-time activities, resources and education. Crispin’s House Inc. encourages youth to make positive choices through community involvement while developing active partnerships that support local families.

Crispin's House is a nonprofit New Hampshire corporation founde

d for the purpose of encouraging partnerships for cooperative and direct support of local families and children

THREE AWARDS ARE GIVEN OUT FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY (watch the video)

Jill Girolimon - The Micheal T. French "light the way" award

Brenda Fortier - Richard St. Gelais "Volunteer Of The Year" award

Josh Desrochers - Gail Thomas Here For Youth" award

My intention during my visit was to produce a short video of the art work created by the students.  It was a pleasure meeting with Al Baines, President and Lorie Goll, Executive Director and of course I asked for a short interview which you can watch in the video below.  The art work by students was interesting and much of it can be viewed in the video.  I was also glad to see awards given out to individuals who are instrumental in moving forward with the vision of the Crispin's House Mission Statement for all they have done.  Such a wonderful group of volunteers that have stepped up to help the youth of the community.  My hats off to all of these volunteers and each and every person who works within the organization, however the best gratitude of all goes to the young adults who have found their way through the programs Crispin's House offers. Many thanks to the staff at the Goffstown Public Library and Crispin's House.  It was a pleasure meeting everyone this past Friday evening.

Goffstown to hold Sign-Up for "Autism 911" - another GoffstownToday.com EXCLUSIVE - You read about it here 1st.

GOFFSTOWN (26 Jan 2010)
Parents of autistic children are invited to register their children with the police department on February 17, 2010.

In conjunction with Easter Seals of Manchester, the New Hampshire 911 call center, and the Goffstown Fire Department, the Goffstown Police Department is sponsoring a registration session for families affected by autism. The registration process involves taking a photograph and some basic information about the child and the family, which can be available to emergency first responders. This process is designed to help police officers and other first responders know where children afflicted with autism live and where they might wander to in a time of crisis.

This invitation is also extended to families wishing to register household members affected by other mental and physical health issues that may assist emergency first responders. This is the third such event held at police headquarters since 2007.

Children being registered will also be able to check out emergency vehicles and get acquainted with community first responders. Registration will take place at the police department on Wednesday February 17th from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Lieutenant Robert Browne at 497-4858.
