The September Project - 4th year for the Goffstown Library

This is the fourth year that Goffstown Public Library in New Hampshire will be participating in the September Project.  In past years, GPL has hosted some creative and inspiring events (such as Eyes Wide Open).  This year, library coordinator Sandy Whipple and her colleagues will be hosting a number of truly remarkable events.

As well as hosting these events throughout September, GPL will be open for twenty-four hours on Sept. 11.  Also, GPL will be sponsoring a helmet liner knit a thon during their 24-hour opening on 9/11.  The knitting has already begun in places as far away as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio.  Amazing things are happening over there in Goffstown N.H and we look forward to hearing how these events turn out!

This was an opportunity to meet the Team and find out more about a group of people helping people through volunteerism.  The Goffstown CERT has and will continue to be instrumental as part of Goffstown's first responders during emergency events such as weather related disasters.  The 2006 and 2007 floods were a prime example, as well as setting up a shelter in December 2008 for residents in need.  We hope you stopped by to find out what CERT is all about and what it does for our community. (proprietary image above, all rights reserved)

Good News from New Boston CERT from Karen Thompson, Director

NEW BOSTON - 3 September 2010, by Karen Thompson, Director, New Boston CERT: New Boston Cert members Karen Thomson, Cheryl Paquette, and Patricia Smith recently attended the awareness course Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings training at the Energetic Material Research and Testing Center at New Mexico Tech in Soccoro, New Mexico. The group spent 4 days learning about explosives, how they are put together, detonated, mishandled, and the fact they can be anywhere and look like anything.  They briefly covered Meth Labs as explosive materials. They attended daily trips to the bombing range for a firsthand look at the results of live explosives. Part of the course focused on the Oklahoma and London terrorist bombings as case studies.  Additionally, William Thomson, CERT director attended the Prevention and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents outside Deming, New Mexico which was also part of the same program.  The focus of that course was to identify the terrorist and interrupt the course of events before an explosion occurs.  The women plan to later attend the Suicide prevention course and Mr Thomson will attend the bombing training.

                      Liberal media downplayed Beck rally

GUEST EDITORIAL, "As I See It", by Guy Caron, 3 September 2010:  If you still believe that liberal bias in the mainstream print and television news media is a conspiracy theory, then consider the following.  There were two rallies in Washington last Saturday, one led by Glenn Beck and one by Al Sharpton.  I read and saw extensive news coverage in print and television for both rallies and this is what I noticed.

Beck’s rally was consistently described as tens of thousands.  Factually correct but descriptively inaccurate.  Although half a million people is made up of many “tens of thousands”, a better description would have been “hundreds of thousands.”  The intent was to make Beck’s rally see .....read the entire editorial.....

"Stick A Fork In 'Em" says Steve Pouliot, GoffstownToday.com sports writer

RED SOX Update by Steve Pouliot 30 August 2010: Well, here the Red Sox sit, August 30, 6.5 games out. They dropped two out of three at The Top this weekend, and while they remain mathematically in the hunt, you can stick a fork in the 2010 Boston Red Sox. What was the problem this year? The weak link? Achilles heal? The problems are deeper than "too many injuries.
Failure in the last two off seasons. A fish rots from the head, and this fish is no different. The last two off-seasons have failed to net a big "middle of the order" bat. They missed out on Texiera in '09, and on Jason Bay in '10. Then the front office went about the selling of "run prevention." This really breaks down to a simple statement: They have not replaced Manny Ramirez' .....Read Steve's full Red Sox Article.....

LETTER TO THE EDITOR - 30 August 2010:  Our Fresh Air experience began when I visited the website and asked for more information through the “Contact Us” page.  I then received an email from New York with the phone number of a volunteer coordinator in New Hampshire.  Her name was Hayley and she was very helpful.  We arranged a date for an interview at our home.  At the interview she explained the program to us, answered all of our questions, went on a quick tour of our house and left us with some paperwork to read and an application to ....Read the entire letter submitted by the Bonneville family of New Boston.....

GOP Candidates mingle with voters in Goffstown on Sunday 29 August

GOFFSTOWN - 30 August 2010:  On August 29th, many candidates came to Goffstown throughout the day to mingle with voters in hopes of winning their approval and votes in the upcoming Primary on September 14th.  The BBQ event provided an opportunity for questions and answers.  Jack Kimball who is running for Governor on a platform of "Jack Means Business" was on his mark with voters with every question that came forward.  John Hikel, who is an incumbent for the House Seat representing Goffstown & Weare made the rounds and was impressed with the openness of all candidates on hand.   John will tell you just how important the constitution is to everyone, and it seems he knows it word-for-word.  GoffstownToday.com currently has a video in production with John to be released this week.  John would also like to say that for Democrats who aren't satisfied with the higher taxes and reckless government spending eroding their future and their children's future, please write me in on the democrat primary ballot on Sept 14.  We will be posting it to his page soon. Whether you are an Independent, Democrat or Republican, be sure to make time to vote in the September 14th Primary.  Many are saying this is one of the most important State and National Elections confronting people in decades. Publishers note: It is unfortunate that the Goffstown-Weare GOP Chair, Pamela Manney refused access to some who desired attendance at this event even if they would pay for a ticket and were registered as a Republican voter.  (GoffstownToday.com images, all rights reserved)

Newspaper Article Misleading        Weare is on the move & reflecting!

EDITORIAL "As I See It" by Guy Caron:  Last week, both the Goffstown News and the New Hampshire Union Leader published an article by Greg Kwasnik about the school board's recent announcement of giving $2.7 million back to taxpayers.

But after reading the article, one might easily be led into believing that the school district has reduced their next budget (2011-2012) by $2.7 million.  This is not the case, as our school folks have just started developing that budget.  What the school district is actually doing is simply passing along $2.7 million dollars to the taxpayers as required by law.

So where did this money come from?

To begin with, it is important to note .....Read Guy Caron's full editorial.....

Wealth Redistribution in Goffstown - Community Thrift Shop of Weare

EDITORIAL by Ivan Beliveau 26 August 2010:  That statement shouldn’t be too surprising as it is what’s happening in the US in general.  And for many, the re-distribution is going in the wrong direction…a very disturbing direction.  The embedded graphic sourced from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shows the data:

Odds-n-Ends in Sports by Steve Pouliot 24 August 2010:  Tom Brady told WEEI "I hate the Jets", which then received plenty of play on the sports talking head circuit. Big Deal. What's he going to do? Talk about how much respect he has for the division rival? Not gonna happen. He pandered to the fan base, and I say good for him. It makes the rivalry more fun. Does it matter to anyone but the fans? Red Sox - Fisher Cats - Texas       Pats vs. Falcons, what to look for

Odds-n-Ends For August 19 by GoffstownToday.com Sports Writer Steve Pouliot: The Red Sox continue to infuriate. Talking heads and and media types try to identify "who are the 2010 Red Sox?" Maybe they are simply and infuriating bunch that won't go away. After getting swept by Texas, The Sox have taken two so far from the Angels, moving their record vs California/Anaheim/LA/San Andreas to 9-0 this season. Now, they are a mere 5.5 games out of both the division and the wild card. as NY and Tampa .....Read Steve's full report here.....

Ok, so the Pats were victorious over defending Super Bowl champs New Orleans last week, which means....

It's week one of the pre-season. Wins and losses are nice, but they really don't amount to anything of signifiacnce. Here's bullet points to look for in Thursday night's match-up vs. Atlanta.

Kevin Harvick wins Michigan, Lagano and Newman Exchange Words

by GoffstownToday.com sports writer Steve Pouliot, 16 August 2010: Kevin Harvick punched his ticket to The Chase as he took the #29 Shell Pennzoil Chevy to victory lane at Michigan this weekend. Harvick, driving for Richard Childress racing, notched his third win of the season and the 14th of his career. It also marked the first win for RCR at Michigan since the late Dale Earnhardt drove the #3 to victory lane in 1990. When asked about that fact, Childress responded "You know, that's 20 years ago. Memory isn't as good as it was. I remember winning here, how proud we was to win for GM Goodwrench back in those days, to win in a GM product up here. There's a lot of pride. It's great to be here today and win today." .....READ STEVE'S FULL STORY at MIS on Harvick, Logano and Newman.....

Goffstown - 11 August 2010:  Goffstowntoday.com spoke with Lea Devriendt after receiving two "Letters to the Editor" for publication today (Click here(1) & here(2).  Lea said "Dan went to the Selectman's meeting Monday night to ask if we could put up a satellite stand in the parking lot across from the public beach because of the road closure.  He explained that business was down 25% and the road closure is going to make matters worse."  GoffstownToday.com confirmed that Dan and Lea Devriendt will need to apply for a vendors permit and the Town will allow the farm to operate a satellite stand between the 23rd and 27th of August across from the Grasmere Grange on the Hillside Methodist Church side of the road.  GoffstownToday.com also confirmed that Lea and Dan will need to show proof  of liability insurance coverage at this location, and all departments from the town such as Police and Fire, etc. will need to sign off on the permit application for final approval.  The Devriendt Farm Stand is a mainstay in our community.  Please spread the word to others and purchase what you need from them, especially during this difficult period of time.  (GoffstownToday.com photo)

Our Video Team has been busy just for you + GLB & GHS sports update

GOFFSTOWN / NEW BOSTON - 12 August 2010:   This past weekend our video team was out recording several events for our viewers.  We want to be sure that we not only tell our viewers about what is on the horizon, but what happened after the sun went down.  This past Saturday, we provided extensive coverage of the Goffstown Main Street Program "Uncommon Art on the Common".  Our video production is to the right.  We also visited the "Blues Festival" in New Boston and obtained a bit of music for this event as well.  It was Hot and so was the crowd cheering for the bands which played back-to-back from noon to 8pm.  Additionally, we visited Apotheca at 3:30 for the performance by AcoustiYah, an Israeli band traveling New England and Manhatton, NY during this upcoming weekend, then moving to R. I. and Boston before returning to Israel on the 14th of September.  And of course a visit to the Village Common / Gazebo in New Boston for the fine performance (and food by NB Recreation) by Meg Devlin Irish and company.  All-in-all, we got to see these events and are pleased to be able to bring them to our viewers.  A particular highlight of appreciation as we received a number of emails from our visitors was the fact that GoffstownToday.com carried every game LIVE of the Goffstown Legion Baseball games (NH State Champions) from Palmer Field in Middletown, CT.  We didn't miss a beat when it came to Goffstown Legion Baseball this season.  We have statistics and game summaries from every game start to finish, with numerous photographs and updates daily.  We extend our thanks to Steve Beal, Sr. for his fine efforts.

Goffstown High School football began their season yesterday with practice and the Parent/Player meeting at the Craig Hieber Auditorium.  We are working on providing extensive coverage of Grizzlies Football for our viewers.

Collaborative Solutions by G. A. Collins    -   Science with Earl Wajenberg

by contributing writer, Attorney George A. Collins - August 2010 (we welcome George as a contributing writer today)

Collaborative Solutions

You may have heard the buzz about Collaborative Law, know something of its use in family law and other disputes, and wondered why the fuss. Could you or a dear one benefit from giving a little of your attention to this increasingly used approach to resolving disputes?

Well, if you’re involved in an unavoidable dispute that’s unfortunate, but the answer to the question of the Collaborative Way’s applicable benefit is a definite ‘Yes”, if you qualify. As in the case of many better ways there is an entry price and one measure of affording that entry price is determining whether at least one of the disputing parties has the will not to engage in the ....READ THE ENTIRE COLUMN....

New heart muscle (New ScientistDiscover Magazine)

In the last few years, biologists have learned how to make stem cells turn into a variety of different tissue types, and even make some tissue revert to stem cells, then be reprogrammed.  Now, they've learned how to turn connective tissue cells (fibroblasts) directly into heart muscle cells.

by GoffstownToday.com sports writer, Steve Pouliot - 11 August 2010:  I had another opportunity to take in training camp at Foxboro this week. As boring as last week was, with the guys in shorts and tees, this week was almost as good as a game. Almost.       Road Aggravation Update         Possible new 1099 rules for small business

GOFFSTOWN - 11 August 2010: The Goffstown Public Works Department announces the closing of South Mast Street for box culvert installation and water main work from Wallace Road to Mountain Road. The closure  (DAY AND NIGHT) will start Monday, August 16, 2010 and is expected to last five days. The road will be closed during the day and at night with no through traffic access. The actual closure is near #95 and #96 South Mast Street, so residents and local traffic will be able to access homes and businesses along South Mast Street in that area, but through traffic is not feasible. The Town hopes to have South Mast Street reopened for Saturday, August, 21, 2010. Commercial vehicles and commuter vehicles needing access for through travel should use Elm Street Detour Route. Local residents needing access for through travel should use Wallace Road to Merrill Road to Mountain Road.

by:  Jim Roberge, CPA of Roberge & Company, LLC (August 2010)  As some of you may have heard the health care reform bill passed a few months back included some changes to the 1099 reporting laws. These changes were put in place for two reasons; (1) Broadening the requirement for when a Form 1099 needs to be filed has been on the IRS wish list for a while, and (2) These new rules will help collect additional revenue that will assist in offsetting the cost of health care reform.

While the bill as a whole can be debated for days on end, my focus here is going to be how these new 1099 rules would affect a small business. There are a large number of small businesses out there who do not ....READ JIM'S ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE....

Post #16 finishes 3rd in NE Regional Play   -     An OPEN LETTER from Steve Beal, Sr.

Middletown, CT 9 August 2010, by Steven Beal, Sr.: In a pitcher's duel for the ages Goffstown Post #16 lost 2-1 to East Longmeadow, Mass. Post #293 in the Northeast Regional Semi Final. Goffstown finished 3rd in the Regional. Steve Moyers from Mass, and New Boston, NH's Mike Bisceglia showed that lefties can really pitch. Both pitched complete games and both pitchers deserved to win this game. Moyers allowed 7 hits while striking out 8 and walking 2. Bisceglia allowed 9 hits while striking out one and walking one. Post #293 will play Branford, CT for the Regional title tonight at 7pm. Ken Morrisino had a 2 out, 2-run flair single into left center to drive in both of East Longmeadow's runs in the 5th inning. AN OPEN LETTER FROM Steve Beal, Sr. on his and the Goffstown Legion Baseball, Wesley Wyman Post #16 Team's experience - 10 August 2010:

It’s all about the kids. It should be about the kids. The kids play the games, they make the plays, they pitch, they hit, they run, they lose, and they win. It’s all about the kids. Yet we get so caught up in the teams, the games, the outcomes, the calls, the results of a kid’s game. The kids often don’t even realize how big a deal their actions are and the lasting effect they have on us all. The innocence of kids is at least half the beauty of all this. Still, I find myself fighting tears this morning as I reflect on the 2010 Goffstown Legion baseball season. Why ....READ STEVE'S ENTIRE LETTER HERE....

Goffstown Legion Baseball - Goffstown Wins against Essex, VT 8-5

Middletown, CT - 8 August 2010, by Steve Beal, Sr.:  Goffstown Post #16 found their bats and awoke them just in time for a 1pm start today in Middletown, CT. Goffstown had 11 hits and scored 8 runs (3rd time in the tourney) in an 8-5 win vs. Essex, VT. Essex came into today's game leading the tournament in team average and several other offensive categories, but it was Post #16 that had the biggest offensive day. Riley Palmer collected his 2nd and 3rd hits of the tourney today, and none were bigger than his towering 3-run shot over the 380' mark in the 8th inning. Palmer's shot broke a 5-5 tie going to the 9th and that was more than enough for Alex Wageling who earned the win with 2 2/3 in ....READ THE FULL STORY AND VIEW GAME STATISTICS....  CLICK HERE to view ALL images
